Multifaceted Gateway

When most people hear the word “caretaker,” their mind pictures doctors, nurses, and other people in the medical field. While health is usually strongly associated with medicine, people often forget that health is dynamic and must be approached from multiple dimensions. When most people hear the word “educator,” they imagine teachers, professors, and tutors. Similarly, when people hear about business, their minds jump to CEOs and corporations. However, my boxing trainer, Kyle Dana Bennett Sr., proves that there are professions that can take on all of these roles and have a great effect on people’s lives. People prefer to label and clearly identify things as being one thing, and not something else – things like culture, gender, profession. In reality, though, the world is much more complicated, and not everything can be put into a clear category. Kyle shows that a profession can become incredibly meaningful while taking on multifaceted roles, even a combination of educator, caretaker, and business owner.

Just like many other young adults, Kyle did not always know what he wanted to do with his life or what career interested him. Having been active in sports his entire life, he decided to continue following his natural life path. Martial arts was “instrumental in [his] transition from a young adult into adulthood.” When he later got involved with boxing, he discovered it was an “outlet that helped give [him] a target and focus to assert [his] aggressive tendencies.” Although physical fitness was formative to Kyle’s character and life path, he strongly believes that “you have to do what you need to do in order to do what you want to do.” For this reason, he supplemented his practical skills with education. He sees every thing from his past as influencing where he is now – a self-employed trainer and coach.

Kyle’s job allows him “to help improve the quality of people’s lives by teaching them the value of health.” With his expertise in exercise elements, such as martial arts, boxing, resistance work, weight lifting, and cardiovascular work, he works with people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. In addition to being a certified trainer, Kyle has earned a third degree black belt and is a certified boxing coach and a former competitive boxer and golden gloves winner. He also earned two associate’s degrees, one in sports and exercise studies and one in therapeutic recreation. Kyle’s dynamic resume highlights the complex nature of his work and emphasizes the importance of having a well-rounded approach to health and fitness.

In addition to all of these skills and credentials, though, Kyle is now tackling a new and not-so-obvious frontier of his profession – business – by becoming an independent trainer. Any form of business comes with many risks. The majority of new businesses fail within the first five years. Kyle is currently in his second year of running his own training business, and although a bit of concern and worrying is obviously understandable, his optimism is evident. The combination of his degrees, which give him “different modalities to affect people’s quality of life,” and all of his other certifications give him the knowledge and expertise to form a business model that allows him to run a professional business for himself. In fact, his desire to help people translates into his business model as well. His ultimate goal is to grow his business, attract more clients, and one day to be able to employ others. While “maintaining a focus on helping improve [his] clients’ quality of life,” he wants to “provide people with a source of income.” He refuses to let his business endeavor overshadow or overtake his original and primary goal of giving people the skills and tools to improve their mental and physical health.

Kyle wants his clients to have “the self-confidence to walk down the street and see themselves as strong, capable individuals.” He ensures that they are exercising correctly and have the right information, especially since his clients’ progress motivates him. The most cringe-worthy part of his job is seeing someone do something that is “potentially going to be harmful to him or her.” He wants to make sure that people are “exercising with proper form so as to get maximum benefit.”  Kyle’s approach to his job is evident in the classes he teaches. Just by attending my first boxing club session with Kyle at Wesleyan University, I immediately noticed that he values his clients’ time and dedication to improving their own health. No matter how big the class got on some days, he always made sure to give each person at least some one-on-one attention in order to specifically help them according to their personal needs. When I first joined the Boxing Club, I only expected to add in a new fitness routine to help me get back in shape. After a semester with Kyle, though, I have gained confidence in my own strength – not just because of the physical aspect of boxing, but because of Kyle’s motivation and emphasis on “self-preservation, self-defense, and proper technique.” It quickly became evident to me that he has the ability to empathize with people, and uses that ability to push people to their limits, all while fostering a fun and excitingly rigorous environment.

However, the most difficult part of getting to this level and actually seeing significant progress in a client is first earning their trust. “After earning this trust, it is important to continue motivating people to work past their comfort zone.” In fact, “most of the limitations that we have, we have actually set for ourselves because a lot of them are mental and self-imposed.” We use a wide array of things, including maybe even certain health conditions, to justify the boundaries that we have established for ourselves. Kyle understands this and sees it as his job to “help people realize how powerful their bodies can actually become by looking past the hurdles they have put up for themselves.” Kyle does not describe himself as an educator, caretaker, or businessman. He simply sees himself as a “gateway to improving one’s quality of life.” He hopes to have a direct positive influence on each client’s life, if they let him. Kyle pushes people to work harder and get stronger to a level they never thought they could get to, and this improves their quality of life because they have conquered a fear and gotten more fit and healthy. Kyle uses all of his skills, credentials, and life experiences to give people the motivation and confidence to have a better life and become the optimal versions of themselves – and this is one of the best ways to make a difference in the world. Even though Kyle is technically just my boxing trainer, he brings in influences from unanticipated quarters of his life and has had an unexpected motivational influence on my life.
